Vallée Blanche, Chamonix’s Classic descent

Descending the arête on the Aiguille du Midi.

Celeste Decker joined Mark and Kathy for a descent of the classic Vallée Blanche. We had great weather, comfortably warmer than some rather chilly recent days.

Firm, but holds an edge well.

Though it hasn’t snowed in the Chamonix are for some time, the snow remained remarkably enjoyable to ski, if a bit firm.

Lunch at the Requin hut.

We had a fine lunch at the Refuge du Requin. Celeste enjoys her smoked salmon, Kathy her pine-barked-wrapped baked cheese “sous-bois”, and Mark his tartiflette.

The Géant icefall.

This year, the thin snowpack made for some dramatic background scenery.

Looking back up to the base of the Géant icefall.
